Veterinary Technician Specialties: Clinical Practice

Veterinary technicians who wish to specialize in the area of clinical practice may apply for admission to the The Academy of Veterinary Technicians in Clinical Practice.

The academy was granted provisional recognition by NAVTA’s Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties in March 2010. Credentialed vet techs belonging to this academy provide “comprehensive, multidisciplinary care,” and are expected to demonstrate a high level of expertise in a range of clinical disciplines related to their species specialty. The three initial species-specific categories are canine/feline, avian/exotic and production animal. The AVTCP, which is modeled after the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, expects to add more species-specific disciplines in the future. The academy will be considered “provisional” until 2020, when 10 years of official certification exams have been administered.

The chair of the AVTCP, Liza Wysong Rudolph, LVT, CVT, explains: “By successfully passing the comprehensive examination, specialists in clinical practice will demonstrate they’re capable of providing a level of clinical practice that is clearly superior to the general veterinary technician.”

Vet techs applying for AVTCP credentials will be tested on subjects relating to clinical practice that include anesthesia and analgesia, behavior, dentistry, diagnostic imaging, knowledge of systems and common diseases, general nursing, laboratory testing, pharmacology, practice management, and surgical nursing.

Benchmarks:

  • 5 years of vet tech clinical practice experience
  • demonstration of involvement in and management of challenging cases
  • advanced educational knowledge gained through formal continuing education
  • successfully passing a comprehensive clinical practice exam
